Burg auf Fehmarn
Four million litres of tropical seawater, with a walk-through tunnel running right down the middle. Sharks glide overhead, moray eels sit in the rock crevices. When the rain comes in sideways across the island, this is where you want to be.

A seawater wave pool, slides and a big sauna area: the FehMare covers 4,500 m² right by the Südstrand. Good for the afternoon when the kids still have energy and you are ready to call it a day.

Burgstaaken, Fehmarn
A decommissioned German Navy submarine, moored in Burgstaaken harbour and open to walk through. It gets tight inside: narrow passages, bunks stacked close together, torpedo tubes, the command post. Children love it. If you do not like small spaces, stay on deck.

Burg auf Fehmarn
Several museums under one roof: natural history, technology, faraway places. Much of it is hands-on, with activity stations and a darkness experiment. Two hours go quickly, especially on days when the wind sweeps across the island.

Wallnau, west coast
Three hundred hectares of wet meadows, ponds and reed beds on the quiet west coast. From the hides you can watch migratory birds and waders without disturbing them. Bring binoculars.

Viewson the islandLeuchtturm Flügge
Flügge, south-west
162 steps up to the gallery, and then half the island lies below you with the Baltic behind it. The tower is open in season and easy to reach on foot or by bike. The view is worth the climb.

Katharinenhof, east coast
The wildest stretch of coast on Fehmarn: a wooded cliff above a beach of pebbles and glacial boulders. Keep your eyes down and you will find flint, and with luck fossils from the Ice Age. Children will collect for hours.

Meeschendorf, Fehmarn
18 holes across 12,000 m², with obstacles that go well beyond ordinary mini golf, plus a view of the Baltic. There is a pirate play area for younger children and a café with a terrace for everyone else.

Sierksdorf
Rollercoasters right by the sea do not exist anywhere else in Germany. Alongside the big coasters there is enough for smaller children, so nobody gets left out. Plan a full day; with the drive there and back you will be busy.

Heiligenhafen
The adventure pier runs about 435 metres out over the water. Back on shore, the Aktiv-Hus has a climbing wall, archery and a sauna. Handy when the weather turns halfway through the day.

Timmendorfer Strand
From the Baltic to the tropics, tank by tank: seahorses, rays, jellyfish and an underwater tunnel. It is busiest around feeding times. Booking online in advance saves you the queue.

Oldenburg in Holstein
A reconstructed Slavic village with thatched houses, set in open countryside. Craftspeople show how work was done here a thousand years ago, animals wander about, and children can try things themselves at plenty of stations.

Hansestadt Lübeck
Lübeck's entire old town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1987: seven towers, brick Gothic architecture, narrow lanes and courtyards you only spot on second glance. You can happily lose half a day here.

Hansestadt Lübeck
Opposite Lübeck's town hall: café and shop downstairs, the Marzipan Museum with its life-sized figures one floor up. The nut cake is the classic. The museum is free.
